Inside the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2: Why Clock Speeds and 5G Matter

At the ‘Snapdragon for India’ event tomorrow, Qualcomm will unveil a sub-$ 100 5G chipset, However, Evan Blass has claimed to have leaked the details for the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 earlier. This is the successor to last year’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 but lower-tier with marginal performance and efficiency improvements.

The Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 retains a 4nm process with an octa-core CPU manufactured with Cortex-A78 and Cortex-A55 6 cores; however, the CPU clock speed has been lowered by 200Mhz. It is also forecasted that the GPU will also be downgraded just a little bit. The chipset only supports 2133 Mhz of LPDDR4X RAM and the non-s variant also gets to use LPDDR5x RAM with a frequency of up to 3200 Mhz. As for the performance, the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 should lie in the middle of the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 and the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, but with higher efficiency than the Gen 1 chip.

A big downer in the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 is that the display is capped at 90Hz with FHD+-based resolutions. This change aims at budget and thus may be HD+ at 120Hz or FHD+ displays at 90Hz smartphones. Furthermore, the future dual ISP does not support 108MP image sensors; therefore, manufacturers would turn to sub-50MP, and 64MP instead.

While the Snapdragon 4s is a budget-friendly 5G chip, 5G has been toned down from the 4 Gen 2, with the downlink rate restricted to 1Gbps (coming down from 2. Whether this leads to the kind of noticeable difference that we observe in our daily use it is still open to question. Available connection types are rather limited, focusing on local connectivity that supports Wi-Fi 5 (ac) and Bluetooth 5. 1 standard, like the 4 Gen 2, assuming these are 4-series chips.

It is still called the Qualcomm Audio and Voice Communication suite, which serves as the means for streaming music with a quality of 96kHz. It also provides multi-frame noise reduction to the camera and EIS for the camera plus dual frequency reception for location.

Better still, wait for negotiation tomorrow to get confirmation from Qualcomm on these details. Besides, tomorrow’s trick will unveil ‘two historic announcements’ – one is indeed related to the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2, regarding the other – nobody knows
